Let The Sunshine In
Your unconventional workplace
Spring 2021
CONCEPT
The capital of the most powerful country in the world. Everyone is busy, life is expensive, traffic can be chaotic, the city's lifestyle always reminds people to compete, thrive, make more money, fight, and win!
Now imagine it is December 21st, the winter solstice, and it is dark at 4 pm. The snow has melted, and everything is grey. You had a full day at work, you are tired, and going back home makes you remember your busy life does not allow you to eat well, exercise properly, hang out with your friends and family the way you would like.
And then, for one moment, when getting out of the metro station, or when waiting for the traffic lights to turn green, you remember to look at the sky.
Hues of blues and purples and the sunset with its rays of corals, oranges, yellows, and goldens topping it all up. It is a free art exhibition of nature right in front of you, and you smile.
This moment drives you back to all the happy summer memories with your loved ones.
Vivid colors, lemonades, popsicles, the ocean, the breeze, the laughs, the tan, the grass, the berries, bikinis, and for the 21+, the drinks!
You are happy again!
The "Let the sunshine in" concept wants to bring happiness, vibrancy, and freshness to a low ceiling space full of boxy columns. A space that will constantly remind the users that live in a metropole of sunny days - a space the users can feel uplifted.
The space has the intention to get LEED ID+C and WELL certifications, so needless to say, it will follow all the requirements and standards for these certifications, but the most evident design effort for this project is daylight maximization.
The project incorporates biophilia and universal design with a playful sunset color palette and customized furniture designed in clever systems to maximize productivity, creating a space where summer vacations meet urban life.
Aspects that are important to mention here are the urbanity of the building, with easy access to public transportation, restaurants, shops and culture; and the daylight entering the building's south facade.
Understanding colors, shapes, grids, layers and how to incorporate biophilia.
Although the concept and the floor plan are simple in the way they communicate, the RCP depicts a golden cane acoustic lighting system to add an interesting complexity to the space. The system portrays sunrays, but also resembles any big city’s metro line system, representing the experiences people have with nature (in this case with the sky) when living in urban areas. One second it’s chaos, noise, skyscrapers, but seconds later everything opens up and one can observe the sky and it’s wonders.
